FASHION PHOTOGRAPHY (2)

Fashion photography can take in the complete spectrum of the photographic medium. One session may be concerned with photographing a model in action, and the next session may involve working in the studio with the model in among prepared props. Almost like a large still life with a model in it.

Fashion photography can take in the complete spectrum of the photographic medium. One session may be concerned with photographing a model in action, and the next session may involve working in the studio with the model in among prepared props. Almost like a large still life with a model in it.

The fashion photographer also has to be to “get on” with people. It can be a nightmare for something new, something different, and at the same time having trouble with the models because they had arguments with their boy friends last night or they have a pimple on their nose or their hormones are winding them up. Fashion photography is a lot more than just taking pictures. The fashion photographer must have a good working relationship with the model. Many fashion photographers work with the same girls as often as possible. This way the photographer and the model learn to appreciate the others personality and this leads to better work. The longer the fashion photographer and the model work together the more the photographer begins to shoot what almost amounts to portrait work.

The biggest problem for the fashion photographer can be the person that he is working for. In the end the client calls the tune. The biggest names in the fashion photography world can get away with arguing a case for something different but they have been learning their trade for possibly twenty or thirty years, and deserve some respect for their ideas, and their knowledge of technique.

Photoshop has made a lot of the printing work easier. Possibly easier is not the right word, but more consistent. A number of the techniques that the old time photographers used, but found difficult to control on a consistent basis can now be used in photoshop. Even obsolete techniques such as gum-bichromate can give really stunning results when used with the right subject. There is a photoshop equivalent for the fashion photographer to use for all of these old techniques.
